VOIP Colocation Tips and
Resources
VOIP Colocation Requires A Data Center With
Easy Access to Both Internet Services and Phone Services
Not all colocation facilities have access to the same services.
There are many colocation facilities that have access to low priced
phone services and charge a bundle for Internet, and others that
have low prices Internet bandwidth and charge a bundle for phone
services. Because VOIP service uses both Internet bandwidth
and phone services it is important to find a colocation facility
which offers access to both voice and internet bandwidth services at
a fair price. Our Colocation Facility Features and Ratings
Page can help you find a facility and compare the ratings and
features of hundreds of colocation facilities for your VOIP service
needs so you can narrow it down and contact the providers that will
best suit your needs.
VOIP Services Benefit From Being In A
Colocation Facility Which Does Not Charge For Cross Connects
Even if the rates for voice services and Internet bandwidth are low,
many colocation facilities (such as Equinix, Switch and Data, and
most others) charge a monthly fee as much as $500/month per cross
connected line. So if a VOIP service needed 2 Voice T1 cross
connects and 2 Internet ports, then the colocation provider might
charge an additional $2,000/month just for the lines to cross to the
colocation cabinet. This is important to consider when
choosing a colocation facility because there are also other
colocation facilities which do not charge a monthly fee for cross
connects. One other way that this can impact service costs is
when you need a second cabinet. If the colocation provider has
a fee for cross connects and you need to run 10 network cabinets
between a few racks or cabinets, this could add up to as much as
$5,000/month with some colocation providers. It is best to
choose a colocation provider who does not charge a cross connect for
or to just budget for the costs.
Fast Internet Network With Low Network Latency
Improved VOIP Call Quality
Because call quality is determined by the quality of the IP
bandwidth used for the service it is important to give careful
consideration to the IP connectivity of the colocation facility you
plan to choose before making your final selection. Location of
the facility can play a role as to weather the IP bandwidth network
will be fast enough to host VOIP services or not. For instance
a facility in Kansas will not be able to have the same Internet
connectivity as a colocation facility in Silicon Valley, California
or Manhattan, New York. Connectivity to many networks with
true intelligent routed network can be a huge benefit to the service
speed and thus providing the absolute best call quality. Some
colocation providers only connect top one, two or three other
networks and yet others will connect to hundreds of other Internet
networks. It is valuable to select an IP backbone that
connects to hundreds of other national and international networks.
Finally select a provider who uses intelligent routing for their
bandwidth. Only the best, top networks use true intelligent
routing. Intelligent routing means that your voice data
packets will be sent the most direct rout for their end destination.
This will help guarantee that there is the best voice quality for
your VOIP service.
